Taking Offense
On the way to work this morning I was listening to the news on the radio (my FM crapped out, so I’m stuck with news or bad AM talk) and the local news station dedicated an EXHORBITANT amount of time to a press conference with the Rutgers women’s basketball team and Don Imus – the radio guy that made those nasty comments the other day.
Now, I agree that Imus’ remarks were pretty awful… I mean, I thought crap like that went out with segregation. Or at least with Michael Richards…
I’ll bet that Imus realized what he said the very second it came out of his mouth and went out over the airwaves… I would imagine that the little voice of reason inside of his head popped up and told him, “Oh, wow, Don… you really blew it this time. Better check your finances and start hunting for a new day job, buddy.”
But at the end of the day, I’m starting to feel that our ‘offense meter’ needs a little bit of adjusting. We as Americans seem to take offense at an awful lot these days, and what really bugs me is that we’re getting offended at the wrong things. I’m not saying that bigoted remarks are okay, or that is forgivable to be a racist, but let’s take a look at the world right now and really think long and hard about what we should be offended by and what is nothing more than a careless, thoughtless remark from a guy that probably should have retired from radio about a decade ago.
Never mind that Rosie O’Donnel says crap on the air all the time about people, but that’s okay – she’s a Celebrity.
For instance, I find it offensive that so many people are totally aware of what the score is on “Dancing with the Stars” but less than 1/5 of the adult population can identify by name or photo the current people running for President after Bush’s atrocious administration finally ends.

And even fewer than that have any idea what or where Darfur is.

I find it offensive that pharmaceutical companies are making billions of dollars by “managing” life-threatening diseases (not “curing” mind you – they’d lose too many paying customers) and at the same time less than half of the American population has viable, useable health insurance.
I find it offensive that American citizens are being duped by companies claiming to have quick-fix weight loss products (and are making almost as much money as the aforementioned pharmaceutical companies) and yet the rate of morbid obesity is up by fifty percent in just the last five years.
Yet it’s okay for one of those fat people to sue a fast-food restaurant because they don’t have the will-power or intelligence to pay attention to what they cram in their mouths.
I find it offensive that Americans are generally more interested in what stupid thing Britney Spears is doing this week, who the father of Anna Nicole’s baby is, or if Lindsay Lohan is wearing underwear than how many of our American war veterans died of drug overdoses at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Los Angeles from January to March of 2007 due to neglect and sub-standard conditions (five, in case you’re interested).
Yes, ANOTHER veteran’s hospital that neglects the people that risk life and limb (and often lose them) to defend and protect our way of life, even though our way of life has become stupid and shallow and uneducated and overfed.

Remember to lock the bathroom door
Here's another silly thing I came across online that made me laugh. And I thought my cat was weird.
